Vanessa Williams shows off her Image Award

Congratulations to America Ferrera and Vanessa Williams who both won in their categories at the 39th Annual NAACP Image Awards, outstanding actress and supporting actress in a comedy series. Silvio Horta also picked up an award for outstanding writing in a comedy series. In young star news Marc Indelicato has received a nomination for a Young Artist Award for his work on Ugly Betty.

Their is some bad news though for some executive producers over at Ugly Betty. Reportedly Marco Pennette and James Haymen have been relieved from their duties. The third season executive producers will be Salma Hayek and Jose Tamez -both returning- and head writer and creator Silvio Horta. Oddly enough Pennette co-wrote the episode with Horta that won a NAACP Image Award, “A Nice Day for a Posh Wedding.” So it seems odd that both of them are leaving since they have had such a huge impact on storylines. It also looks like we will be getting an extended Season 3 of at least 27 episodes!

Ugly Betty is GLAAD

Wednesday, January 23rd, 2008

Ana Ortiz at the 18th Annual GLAAD Media Awards

Congratulations to Ugly Betty on being nominated for outstanding comedy series for the 19th Annual GLAAD Media Awards. Fellow ABC programs Brothers & Sisters and Desperate Housewives were also nominated. In fact ABC lead broadcast and cable networks with 9 nominations, Logo was the second most honored channel with 5 nominations.

Spanish language channel Univision raked up 10 nominations with Aztec América tying with ABC for 9. Betty’s competion for the catergory includes The Sarah Silverman Program on Comedy Central (which makes sense) and The War at Home on FOX (which is awful).

The NAACP Image Awards Can’t Be Stopped!

Friday, January 18th, 2008

Richard T. Jones and Kevin Frazier announce the 39th Annual NAACP Image Awards nominations

nominations for 39th Annual NAACP Image Awards

The Golden Globes was a wilted down version of their normal alcohol party with crazy dresses and lots of bling. After failing to reach a compromise with the Writers Guild of America the Golden Globes were a boring press conference that few bothered to watch. Even though America Ferrera was nominated in Ugly Betty’s sole recognition (Yes I am holding a grudge) for best actress she lost to Tina Fey of 30 Rock.

Luckily for us Ugly Betty fans other awards shows were wiser The NAACP Image Awards and The Film Independent’s Spirit Awards have both received waivers and will go forward as planned.

The Best of 2007

Wednesday, December 19th, 2007

bestgraph1.jpg

The American Film Institute picked Ugly Betty as one of its 10 Best TV Programs of 2007. The exclusive list contained mostly cable programming but another ABC comedy managed to squeeze onto the list, Pushing Daisies. The show was created by Bryan Fuller the creative genius behind Dead Like Me. Now is the perfect time to catch up on the show if you haven’t been tuning in.

Grey’s Anatomy star Katherine Heigel, might be surprised that her movie Knocked Up made the list for 10 Best Films of 2007. Since in her recent Vanity Fair interview she stated that the movie was sexist. The American Film Institute is a nonprofit organization that works to preserve the legacy and unique culture of American film.

AFI will hold a luncheon to honor Ugly Betty and the rest of the best on January 11, 2008. Scholarships have also been established in the names of all 20 honorees to the AFI Conservatory.

For more information on Katherine Hiegel visit Grey’s Anatomy. You can see the complete honorees at the American Film Institute site.

America Gets Golden Globe Nod

Thursday, December 13th, 2007

America Ferrera

Congratulations to America Ferrera for being the sole representative of Ugly Betty for the 2008 Golden Globe nominees. Somehow the show didn’t receive a nomination for best comedy series and their was a surprising lack of love for Vanessa Williams. In Season 2 she’s been even more evil and calculating than Season 1. How could this go unrecognized?  Theirs no way she didn’t give one of the best performances of the year as Wilhelmina Slater.

Luckily the Satellite Awards recognized her performance and nominated her in best supporting actress in a comedy. The Satellite Awards also nominated Ugly Betty for best comedy and America Ferrera as best comedy actress. Other programming that received nods from the Satellite Awards and the Golden Globes includes Showtime series and Queen Latifah’s well buzzed role in HBO’s Life Support

Tough Emmy competition ahead for Ugly Betty

Thursday, July 26th, 2007

Will Ugly Betty be victorious?
Betty

See I am psychic! All of my Ugly Betty predictions came true. Ugly Betty ended up receiving a total of 11 Emmy nominations. Both America Ferrera and Vanessa Williams received nominations in their respective categories. Salma Hayek and Judith Light were also nominated for their guest starring roles in the series. Besides a nomination for best casting (which Ugly Betty should easily win) they are nominated for outstanding comedy series against some very tough competition, Including NBC’s The Office and HBO’s Entourage.

America Ferrera and Vanessa Williams are in for a battle as well. America is squaring off against Weeds Mary Louise Parker and Julia Louis Dreyfus former Seinfeld alumni and winner of last years Emmy for her role in The New Adventures of Old Christine. Interestingly enough Vanessa is up against Jamie Pressly of NBC’s My Name is Earl who recently expressed her dissatisfaction with Ugly Betty.

Ugly Betty Emmy Predictions: My Top 8

Wednesday, July 18th, 2007

The 2007 Primetime Emmy’s will be announced tomorrow! Until then read my predictions on which Ugly Betty stars could receive nominations and who probably won’t. After reading feel free to give me your predictions and tell me why I’m wrong.

America Ferrera

  1. America Ferrera as Betty Suarez: Her portrayal of the hardworking Betty Suarez melted millions of hearts around the world. Not only did she represent a unique portrayal on TV but her character sparked debates about the fashion industry, the representation of female beauty on TV, and even inner beauty! Predictions: Best chance of making the ballot since she’s the lead in the show and she’s been raking up wins all year including the Golden Globe and SAG.

Vanessa Williams

  1. Vanessa Williams as Wilhelmina Slater: She’s a Bitch and she revels in it. Her portrayal of the ruthless Wilhelmina Slater is a fan favorite. No one else could take a character who has moments of great evil and also make her both vulnerable and likeable. Predictions: If theirs any justice in the world she will receive a nomination! As far as supporting actresses go she has the best chance of making the ballot.

Predictions for the other 6: I know they all deserve to win but unfortunately they all can’t. None of these will probably make the ballot, though they’ve all given incredible performances. If anything they will end up canceling each other out. The show itself should definitely receive a nomination for best ensemble cast.

Ana Ortiz

  1. Ana Ortiz as Hilda Suarez: Her performance as Hilda Suarez has even received comparison to TV legend Lucille Ball. In almost any one else’s hands Hilda would have been a loud mouthed Queens’ girl but Ana made Hilda both vulnerable smart and loveable.
